The main goal of the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Programme in Asia (MAPPA) after its devolution to ICIMOD, was to launch and introduce the MAPPA network in the regional member countries including Afghanistan, China and Myanmar. As a follow up to the strategy in China, MAPPA was launched in August 2006 under the leadership of R. B. S Rawat, Regional Programme Coordinator- MAPPA. ICIMOD in collaboration with the Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) organised a two-day launch workshop from 31st July to 1st August 2006, preceded by a three days field visit to Chu Xaiong, Dali and Lijiang prefectures in Yunan province in South West China from 28-30 July.
A high level delegation from ICIMOD RMCs, comprising Dasho Dawa, Director General, Department of Forests, Ministry of Agriculture, and Mr. Raling Nawang Drukdra, Director, Royal Botanical Park, Department of Forests, from Bhutan; Mr. B.S Sajwan, Chief Executive Officer, National Medicinal Plants Board, from India; and Mr. H.K Saiju, Director General, Department of Plant Resources, Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, Nepal and Prof. R.P Chaudhary, Ex Board Member, ICIMOD, Central Department of Botany, Tribhuban University, Kathmandu, from Nepal participated in the workshop. Including three participants from ICIMOD-MAPPA a total of 25 participants from China attended the workshop.
